Griffin charge downgraded

Huddersfield Giants prop Darrell Griffin, who faced the possibility of being banned for up to seven matches when he appeared before the Rugby Football League’s disciplinary panel, will only miss one game.

The former Wakefield Wildcats forward was sent off after the final whistle in Sunday’s 20-19 home defeat by Wigan Warriors for verbally abusing referee Phil Bentham and was initially charged with a grade D offence, which carries a ban of up to five games.

But the offence was downgraded to C at Tuesday’s hearing and he came out with a one-match ban and a £300 fine.

Griffin faced an additional charge of raising his knees in the tackle, which carries up to a two-match ban, but the panel decided to re-examine the incident.

Griffin will miss the Giants’ engage Super League match at Warrington Wolves on Friday but will be free to face St Helens at the Galpharm Stadium on Monday.

Wigan prop Stuart Fielden, who was cited by the match review panel for allegedly raising his knees during the Huddersfield game, was found not guilty and will be free to line up against St Helens in the Good Friday derby.

Wakefield hooker Tevita Leo-Latu, who was sent off during his side’s 18-8 defeat at Hull FC last Friday, has been banned for three matches and fined £300 after being found guilty of a reckless high tackle.

Catalans Dragons prop Jerome Guisset will also miss both Easter fixtures after being handed a two-match ban and a £300 fine for a reckless high tackle on St Helens full-back Paul Wellens during his side’s 24-10 victory on Saturday.

Guisset’s team-mate Adam Mogg was found guilty of a dangerous tackle in the same game but escaped with a £300 fine.
