A group of Sports students from Filton College in Bristol are now fully qualified match officials after recently undertaking the RFLs match officials foundation course.
The students, from a variety of sporting backgrounds, had very little Rugby League experience prior to undertaking the course, but over the course of the day they expanded and developed their knowledge of the rules of Rugby League and how to successfully officiate a game.
The course covered the theory base of the rules and a practical session outside which gave the students chance to practice refereeing and touch judging.
The foundation course at Filton College now means the students are qualified to officiate at any match outside of the professional game.
An active campaign is currently underway in the South West to recruit new match officials to cover the newly expanded South West Division of the Rugby League Conference, which has accepted new teams for the forthcoming season.
There is also a new junior competition with around 15 teams taking part. Anyone interested in getting involved in refereeing or becoming a match official can contact Danny McNeice, the Rill’s match officials development officer on danny.mcneice@rfl.uk.com or 07775 022800.
