Corporate Responsibility - "the voluntary actions taken by a company to address the ethical, social and environmental impacts of its business operations and the concerns of its stakeholders".

RFL CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY POLICY STATEMENT

The RFL has developed a comprehensive Corporate Responsibility Policy which pulls together existing polices on Equality, Health and Safety Policy, Customer Service and Child Protection and includes for the first time an Environmental Policy and a Business Ethics Policy. 

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

The RFL is committed to reducing our impact on the environment in everyway reasonably possible. This takes the form of reducing its use both of energy and other consumables, carbon offsetting, increasing the use of renewable sources of energy and taking an active approach to recycling.  In addition the RFL will review all policies with environmental considerations in mind and ensure that its staff understand and commit to the policies through a programme of education and appraisal.

The RFL will also follow the same principles in applying this policy to the wider game so that for example the RFL will amend the Minimum Ground Standards to encourage clubs to undertake environmental changes at their grounds and to develop new stadia which meet green criteria.

ETHICAL POLICY

The RFL will ensure that ethical values are applied to its business behaviour.  

The RFL has published its core values - passionate, uncompromising, inclusive, the family sport - and believes that these values should underpin the way the RFL conducts itself.  

The RFL commits to an ethical standard of behaviour from it and its staff, to open governance and to fair and ethical trade.  

The RFL will review all contracts with business partners and suppliers to ensure that they apply an ethical approach to their business and particularly in the areas of kit and match balls commits to  dealing only with those companies who apply strict ethical standards to their suppliers.

The RFL as a governing body is responsible for the rules and regulations of the game, it expects the clubs and those who play the game to abide by an ethical code both on and off the pitch and it should ensure that it does so itself.

The RFL will encourage its members to apply ethical values, not just to their behaviour as rugby league clubs but also to their broader business behaviour.

The RFL produce a plan to cover both Environmental and Ethical Policy with targets and objectives to measure its progress which will be reported in its annual review.

EQUALITY

The RFL is committed to the principles of equal opportunities and to ensuring that the culture, philosophy and processes within the Organisation and the game are free from bias and discrimination. 

As the National Governing Body for Rugby League, the RFL is responsible for setting standards and values which should apply throughout the game.  The sport is a game for everyone to enjoy equally and this should be reflected in the process and procedures that are applied throughout the organisation.  The RFL will operate an equal opportunities policy in the recruitment, selection, training and promotion of staff at all levels and all such decisions concerning these issues will be based on merit and ability.

The RFL affirms its commitment to the equal treatment of all and will not tolerate discrimination on the grounds of age, ethnic origin, gender, special needs, including learning and physical disabilities, class or social background, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, colour or political persuasion.

The RFL will take positive action to eliminate individual and institutional discrimination; to comply with its statutory and legislative obligations; to meet the needs of its staff and partners and to make equality and equal treatment a core issue in the development and delivery of its policies, initiatives and services and in the way it manages its staff.

The RFL has published an Equality Action Plan and will measure the organisation's progress in delivering against this Plan.

HEALTH & SAFETY

The Executive Chairman takes ultimate responsibility for Health & Safety in the organisation. The RFL attaches great importance to the health, safety and welfare of all members of staff.  The policy is to encourage active co-operation of all members of staff to ensure the health and safety of all individuals who may be affected by our operations.

The RFL is committed to:

The elimination of work-related injuries and ill health to the benefit of individuals and the RFL.  The RFL views the successful management of health and safety as a key element to the success of its business performance.

A proactive approach to the systematic identification of hazards and to achieve this, adequate assessment to control any risks is to be used throughout the RFL offices.

Ensuring individuals are provided with suitable instruction, training, information and supervision in order to develop a competent workforce who can carry out their work in safety.

Pursuing progressive improvements both in health and safety performance and the systems put in place to manage safety.   This will include regular internal monitoring of the implementation of the Policy and continual review of the contents in order to meet the requirements of new legislation, business changes and where improvements are required. 

The RFL considers health and safety to be an integral element of good management and will ensure that adequate provision is made for the resources required in order to fully comply with all health and safety legislation. 

The RFL expects all staff to apply the same principles of Health & Safety management to activities led by the RFL whether they be Performance Camps, Matches or training sessions. 

In particular the RFL is committed to providing a safe and family friendly environment at all its matches.  The RFL recognises the responsibilities of each Stadium it hires in relation to the Safety of Sports Ground Act and acknowledges that the Stadium management has sole responsibility for safety arrangements on match day.  The RFL will do everything in its power to ensure that its staff, clubs, agents and guests comply with all lawful instructions of the Stadium Management in this regard

CUSTOMER SERVICE

The RFL is committed to providing an excellent service to all its customers and aims to provide a high level of customer service by an RFL which is professional and approachable for supporters and other members of the general public who need help advice and information on any aspect of the League's activities or services.  The RFL publishes its Customer Charter in the Official Guide and on the website.

CHILD PROTECTION

The RFL and all constituent parts of the Game are expected to:

    • Accept the moral and legal responsibility to implement procedures to provide a duty of care for young people, safeguard their wellbeing and protect them from abuse;

 

    • Respect and promote the rights, wishes and feelings of young people;

 

    • Recruit, train and supervise its employees and volunteers so as to adopt best practice to safeguard and protect young people from abuse, and themselves against false allegations;

 

    • Require staff and volunteers to adopt and abide by the Child Protection Policy and Implementation Procedures which incorporate the Rugby League Code of Ethics and Conduct;

 

  • Respond to any allegations appropriately.

The RFL has a comprehensive Child Protection Policy which is set out in the Official Guide and on the RFL website.  In addition the RFL works closely with the CPSU (Child Protection in Sport Unit) to ensure that its Policy is rolled out across the sport.
