This time it was Brantingham Park, home of local Rugby Union side Hull Ionian’s who played host for this Super 6 encounter under floodlights between the two sides locked for third place in the standings.
The day didn’t start of the best for St Mary’s as they had to endure a tough seven hour journey up to East Yorkshire after being held up by traffic on their way up the country.
Hull capitalised on a St Mary’s side who struggled to get into the game in the early stages of the match. The first try for Hull came from the most unlikeliest of people, Prop Keith Rowley, who was quickest to react and pounce on a loose ball after a speculative grubber kick near the St. Mary’s line on the last tackle. Certainly not a contender for try of the season. Conversion missed by Tuffour.
Next over the whitewash for Hull was Dave Mankel who continued his impressive form, during a St. Mary’s attack in their own half, he was able to somehow raid the ball from a St. Mary’s player and streak home to the tryline. Conversion missed by Tuffour.
The next Hull try scoring effort came from Ryan Steen who under the posts sold an outrageous dummy to the man running on his inside, which the St. Mary’s defence bought, to cross under the black dot almost unopposed. Conversion made by Tuffour.
Hull’s last try just before half-time was a well worked move from Hull. A break made by Chris Parkinson down the right hand side of the defence, he then got the ball away to supporting centre Sam De Roeck running on at pace, going over in the right corner. Conversion missed by Tuffour.
It looked likely that Hull would shut out St Mary’s in the first half after limiting them to few real scoring opportunities in the first half.
However Matt Carter got over, after Simmies were given good field position on the back of a mistake from Hull at the kick-off and a penalty. He ran and smart angle near to the Hull line and was able to have the strength to go over the line. Conversion made by Sadler.
18-6 Half-time score.
The try before half-time seemed to spur Simmies, while Hull like last week seemed to go to sleep. Despite being outscored four tries to one in the first half, they were only two converted tries off being level. They took the game to Hull, a contest was on.
Hull who were looking to kill the game off looked to have done that, when Londoner Dennis Tuffour crossed for the first of two for the night. His first effort, he was able to get sneak in at the corner.
The next Hull effort came from Mankel again who like last week was given a try on a plate from Jack Stearman, who after a strong run through the heart of the St. Mary’s defence was stopped in his tracks yards from the line, he was able to get the ball free to Mankel who had the simple job of touching the ball down over the St Mary’s line. Conversion missed by Tuffour.
The last try for Hull was one of high quality, Dennis Tuffour left his opposite defender for dead, skipping past him and coasting in from 20 metres. His seventh four-pointer of the Super 6 season. Conversion made by Tuffour.
The outstanding Matt Carter crossed again at the end for St. Mary’s but that proved to be scant consolation for St. Mary’s. Conversion made by Sadler.
Despite not getting his name on the score sheet, Man of the Match went to Hull’s Hooker Jordan Rice for an outstanding showing in defence and attack. He was backed up by solid run-outs from Ryan Steen and Jack Stearman.
It was a plucky effort from an intrepid St. Mary’s outfit, who gave Hull a test especially with their attack when in possession in Hull’s half. Hull would like to give best wishes to Jude Chuckwu? who unfortunately suffered a serious leg injury. We hope he is able to make a full recovery. Also Hull would like to thank everyone who made the effort to turn out for the game on a cold November evening.
