Hull’s one man show over powers Team Northumbria
On a Freezing cold Wednesday afternoon at Bullocksteads, Hull University travelled to Newcastle for the latest instalment of the Gillette Super Six League. Hull started the quicker and it only took 4 minutes for Hull’s Dennis Tuffor to burst through some sloppy defence to streak in from half way before seeing his own conversion attempt fall short.
Northumbria’s forwards started to get into the game but couldn’t convert the pressure into ppints. 18 minutes in and Hull scored against the run of play through centre Jordan Rice who touched down in the left corner, a great conversion from Tuffor took the score to 0 - 10
Northumbria then struck back through Captain James Hall with 23 minutes gone in the game. Some great defensive play from the Northumbria Forwards lead to Hull spilling possession, Northumbria took full advantage and capitalised with Hall running over for a well worked try. The conversion attempt was missed but Northumbria were back in the game.
At the half hour mark, Hull’s Tuffor again broke the cover from inside his own half and some poor Northumbria defending lead to him scoring his second try of the game. Again, his conversion fell short. Hull continued to press at the end of the first half with Tuffor completing his hat trick with another powerful burst. The strong stand off made no mistake with his conversion this time to wrap up the half at 4 - 20
Northumbria knew it wasn’t going to be their day when with only 5 minutes gone in the half some more slack defending allowed Ryan Steen to flick a neat inside ball to the supporting Tuffor for him to continue his scoring spree under the posts. The easy conversion was added to extend their lead to 4 - 26
Northumbria finally then started to take the game to Hull, some patient build up play took them into Hull territory and 10 minutes into the second half Northumbria made it over the try line with a good team try being score by Wilkinson after the ball was quickly spread out to the right hand side. Higgins added the conversion. 10 – 26.
Hull then stamped their authority back onto the game 19 minutes into the half when they ran in another try in the corner when substitute Lewis Wilke out paced the cover in a twenty yard sprint. With defences tiring the game began to too and froe and shortly later Northumbrias Forbes was able to get himself on the score sheet for Northumbria by diving in from close range.
It was hull who had the final say however when the outstanding dennis Tuffor broke the cover and turned from scorer to provider with a great one handed off load to the supporting Wilke who slid in to seal Hull’s victory. Steen failed to convert but Hull were more than happy with the final scoreline that see’s them move up the table after back to back wins.
