Ellis on target for Hull

England international Gareth Ellis made his mark on his second appearance for Hull to help them beat Wakefield 24-6 and secure a comfortable passage through to the quarter-finals of the Tetley\'s Challenge Cup

The 32-year-old second rower eased himself back into Super League with a low-key debut for the Black and Whites a week ago but rolled the years back here with a superb performance as Hull clinically disposed of the Wildcats in their fifth-round tie at the KC Stadium.

Ellis, who was at the heart of a tremendous defensive effort and tormented the Wildcats with his clever offloads, capped his display with his first try for the club while long-serving centre Kirk Yeaman scored his 150th.

The former Leeds and Wakefield favourite, who played the full 80 minutes on his comeback from a foot injury a week earlier, was forced to do another 75-minute stint after Hull\'s forward resources were depleted by the loss of Liam Watts and Richard Whiting with leg injuries.

Watts limped off after only 10 minutes but Hull took a stranglehold on the game with a spell of three tries in six minutes up to the midway point of the first half.

Scrum-half Richard Horne, another veteran in splendid form, opened the scoring after a superb offload by Ellis got full-back Shannon McDonnell running into space.

Ellis got his try following another mazy run by the ever-alert McDonnell and winger Tom Briscoe kicked ahead for Yeaman to score his 150th after Daniel Holdsworth\'s pinpoint pass created an opening on the wing.

Holdsworth converted two of the tries to establish a 16-0 lead and leave the Wildcats chasing the game.

Full-back Lee Smith went close to scoring for the visitors after chasing his own kick but generally they failed to match the creativity of their hosts.

The out-of-contract Briscoe, who looks set to join another Super League club following the collapse of his proposed move to Australia, could have had two tries before the break with steadier finishing.

Wakefield saw more of the ball in the second half but they lacked the imagination to crack a superbly-drilled defence and Hull duly wrapped up a comfortable win.

When replacement hooker Aaron Heremaia burst clear seven minutes into the second half he failed to find the supporting Tom Lineham but there was no stopping loose forward Jay Pitts four minutes later when he backed up a break by Horne to register his side\'s fourth try.

Wakefield finally breached the Hull defence on 58 minutes when busy hooker Paul Aiton got second rower Ali Lauitiiti crashing over for a try and Lee Smith added the goal.

But Hull had the final say three minutes from the end when Pitts dived on a bouncing ball over the Wakefield line to claim his second try.
