Warrington Wolves moved to within two points of Super League leaders Wigan Warriors by sweeping past Bradford Bulls at the Provident Stadium.

The under-strength Wolves were in inspired form when defeating the Warriors last Monday and, while far from their best this afternoon, were more than worthy winners in west Yorkshire.

Tony Smith's men did not score their first try until midway through the first half through Ben Currie, but Lee Briers, Michael Monaghan and Trent Waterhouse all crossed before the break to give Warrington a 20-0 half-time lead.

Ryan Atkins all but ended the game as a contest shortly after the resumption before Chev Walker and James Donaldson grabbed consolation tries for Bradford, who suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, as Warrington noticeably took their foot off the gas in the final half-hour.

The Wolves' victory over their league leaders’ shield rivals six days ago did not come without a cost as leading try-scorer Joel Monaghan and England internationals Richie Myler and Chris Hill were absent today.

Yet they still came flying out of the traps and were only thwarted early on by some defiant defending from the Bulls.

Briers looked to have opened the scoring after going over from Monaghan's pass, but referee Richard Silverwood ruled the stand-off had not grounded the ball.

Needing to weather an early storm, the out-of-form Bulls did so with aplomb, Jamie Foster – in his first game back since recovering from a ruptured pectoral muscle – doing an excellent job of marshalling the defence.

Though Bradford steadily grew into the game, they were made to pay for their first lapse in concentration as rising star Currie burst through a gap in the home defence to cross in the left corner from 30 yards out.

Bradford's line was breached again three minutes later when a slick move down the right ended with Chris Riley passing inside to Briers, who this time would not be denied.

The Wolves added two more tries before the interval to put themselves firmly in the ascendancy.

First, indiscipline in the tackle from Bradford gave Warrington a penalty 30 yards from goal and Monaghan superbly dived over near the posts after clever work from dummy half before second-rower Waterhouse squeezed down on the left from stand-in scrum-half Stefan Ratchford's pass.

Any hopes the Bulls had of getting back into the match after the interval took a significant blow as Atkins intercepted a cut-out pass and dived over unchallenged five minutes after the re-start, with Brett Hodgson grabbing his third conversion.

To their credit, the Bulls refused to lie down, but they looked bereft of ideas in attack and a couple of handling errors cost them dearly in crucial positions.

Their persistence paid off, however, as – seconds after John Bateman had been held up – Walker went over under the posts in the 66th minute.

Perhaps realising they had let their levels slip after scoring their fifth try, Warrington looked to close out the game on a high note, but it was Bradford who had the last say through Donaldson's try on the hooter.
