Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ended their four-match losing run in style with an eight-try romp over the woeful Salford City Reds at the Salford City Stadium to rekindle their Super League play-off hopes.

The Wildcats had eight tryscorers as they piled on the misery for struggling Salford, whose colourful chairman Marwan Koukash made a point of storming into the home dressing room at half-time to witness coach Brian Noble berating his players after they trailed 30-4.

There was only a marginal improvement by Noble's men in the second half as Wakefield, boosted by the return of half-backs Paul Sykes and Tim Smith and with dominant performances by forwards Oliver Wilkes and skipper Danny Kirmond, continued the largely one-way traffic.

It was an inauspicious way for Salford captain Martin Gleeson to mark his 350th senior appearance.

Little went right for the Reds, who look desperately in need of new blood and lost their inspirational forward Shannon McPherson early in the game.

McPherson, who had been out for three months with a knee injury, was just 14 minutes into his comeback when he came off worst from an attempted tackle on Wilkes and had to be helped from the field badly dazed and with a cut chin.

They were leading 4-0 at the time after quick hands from Theo Fages, Lee Gaskell and Gleeson created an opening for winger Danny Williams to score the game's first try.

Wakefield drew level thanks to a soft try from hooker Paul Aiton, who went over un-touched from dummy half on 17 minutes, but they then found their rhythm to run their opponents ragged.

A short pass from stand-off Sykes got Kirmond racing through a gap in the home defence for a second try, making up for his knock-on from the kick-off, and centre Dean Collis exposed more defensive frailty after second rower Ali Lauitiiti's deft kick had forced a goal-line drop-out.

Richard Mathers was then the beneficiary of a cleverly-executed kick off the side of his boot by Tim Smith and Sykes scored a fifth try on the stroke of half-time, finishing off a move sparked by prop Kyle Amor's pass out of the tackle to Mathers.

Lee Smith kicked his fifth goal of the first half to stretch the Wildcats' lead to 30-4 and, as the visitors left the field to a standing ovation from their fans, the stern look on Koukash's face as he headed for the dressing rooms at half-time told its own story of Salford's woe.

The Reds initially looked energised by Noble's pep talk but their suspect defence cracked again to allow Wilkes to crash over from short range and Smith's sixth goal meant the visitors had scored 36 unanswered points.

Pacy winger Jodie Broughton briefly halted the debacle when he intercepted Mathers' pass and sprinted 90 metres for a solo try and Gaskell added the goal.

But another interception, this time by Tim Smith, broke up a rare Salford attack and set up the position for Danny Washbrook to send left winger Ben Cockayne racing away for Wakefield's seventh try on 63 minutes.

More clever handling by Tim Smith then enabled Collis to get left right winger Peter Fox over for the game's final try.
