Winger Kirk Dixon scored four tries as Daryl Powell celebrated his first win as Castleford Tigers coach in a 13-try feast against derby rivals Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the Magic Weekend in Manchester.

Dixon took the scoring honours but it was the Rangi Chase show in the sun at the Etihad Stadium as the England half-back produced his trademark bag of tricks to inspire the Tigers to their best win of the season and lift them away from the foot of the table.

Chase, whose long-term future at Castleford remains unclear, mesmerised the Wakefield defence with his deceptive handling and expert kicking game as he helped create five of their nine tries.

Wakefield, who won 37-16 at the Wish Communications Stadium in March, were desperately disappointing as they lost further ground in their pursuit of a play-off spot.

It was largely one-way traffic from the fourth minute when hooker Daryl Clark squeezed over from dummy half after forward Grant Millington had been brought down just short of the line.

Jamie Ellis kicked the first of his six goals and the Tigers were quickly in again with a spectacular 90-metre try.

Blockbusting winger Justin Carney picked up a pass by his boot laces from his centre Jordan Thompson on his own 10-metre line and found himself in space.

He evaded Wakefield centre Dean Collis and rounded full-back Richard Mathers before sending the supporting Ellis over for a glorious try to make it 10-0.

The Tigers were scoring at a point a minute when Dixon touched down Chase's kick to the line for his first try after it had taken a wicked deflection away from defender Ben Cockayne and they were good value for their lead.

Wakefield coach Richard Agar's response was to send on Samoan international Taulima Tautai for his Super League debut but the Wildcats struggled to get out of their own half and they fell further behind after 25 minutes when prop Craig Huby regathered Chase's high kick to register a fourth try.

Ellis' third goal made it 22-0 but the slow-starting Wildcats struck with two tries in five minutes to briefly haul themselves into the game.

Tautai, who was set to join Castleford until the sacking of coach Ian Millward, fended off the attempted challenge of Chase to get Collis over for his eighth try of the season and captain Danny Kirmond then took Lee Smith's pass to slice through for another.

Lee Smith added both conversions to make it 22-12 but Castleford pulled away with two more tries in the last five minutes of the first half.

Dixon produced a spectacular finish after collecting Chase's high kick to score his second and the explosive Carney proved unstoppable at the other corner to deservedly get on the scoresheet.

At 32-12, there was no way back for Wakefield, although Collis scored his second try after collecting Tim Smith's pinpoint kick to the corner.

Dixon accepted Chase's long pass to complete his hat-trick on 50 minutes and, after Thompson barged over for a solo score, finished off a sweeping move to add his fourth try of the match.

Wakefield replacement Chris Annakin grabbed a consolation try and Lee Smith kicked his fourth goal but Ellis had the final say when he put over a drop goal to round off the scoring.
