Dream Team half-back Scott Dureau made a successful return from a career-threatening medical complaint with a man-of-the-match performance as Catalan Dragons kicked off the 2013 Magic Weekend with a win over London Broncos.

Dureau was voted as the Super League's best scrum-half last season but has been unable to show why this year after a tumour was found behind his eye last September.

He has been sidelined ever since but made a timely 18-point return at the Etihad Stadium as rugby league camped itself in the blue half of Manchester for the weekend.

It provided the Dragons with just their third Magic win in seven attempts while London, who have a positive record at the event, could well be bottom of the ladder come the end of tomorrow's play.

If Salford City Reds get a point or more against Widnes Vikings then they will overhaul them and the capital club can have few complaints after an errant display which saw them constantly hamstring themselves.

Dureau was the beneficiary of their first charitable act, with a walk-in try off a 10th-minute intercept off hooker Ben Fisher giving him the best possible welcome back to the game.

The error was entirely out of keeping for the normally-efficient Fisher and the same could be said of Michael Witt's 16th-minute ball to ground which was seized upon by Morgan Escare who - with the help of poor defending from Jamie O'Callaghan - went in for his 10th try of a fine debut season.

Veteran schemer Craig Gower would drag his side level in no time, though, with Witt providing able support.

First Gower's no-look pass sent Chris Bailey in and then, after Escare coughed up Gower's towering kick, Witt was on hand to lead the Catalan defenders a merry dance as he went in. Witt goaled both to equal the scores at 12-12.

That looked certain to be the score when the hooter went, but in added time another O'Callaghan error helped Catalan regain the lead. Dureau's kick was nothing more than a time-waster but rather than field it and take a tackle, O'Callaghan tipped it into the air and presented Daryl Millard with a simple score.

London's response was to start the second half by forcing a fifth goal-line drop-out but some loose attacking play saw them break down and they were soon restarting again as Catalan scored a fourth try.

Freddie Vaccari got it, keeping his balance in the corner, but the magic was in the making as Kevin Larroyer stood in the tackle to dump a pass out to the right. Dureau added the extras to take the score to 22-12.

The former Newcastle Knight then slotted a penalty after some sloppy London defending and if the outcome remained in any doubt, Vaccari soon put paid to that.

The winger has been a bit-part player this season but grabbed his fifth try of the campaign with 20 minutes left after Super League's oldest player, Steve Menzies, won possession by forcing Kieran Dixon in touch, and then played a fine pass to Vaccari in the corner.

London's resolve was well and truly broken and Escare illustrated as much when he finished off a fine series of offloads, although they did at least hit back a little, with top scorer Dixon's long-range special the try of the game.

The winger broke through on halfway and then chipped over Escare before beating him in a foot race, but his 18th try of the year would be his side's last act as Catalan wrapped things up.

First Dureau kicked for Zeb Taia to score and then Leon Pryce had the legs to pull clear after a smart Escare break.
