Widnes Vikings notched an historic win to deepen the woes of St Helens and increase the pressure on coach Nathan Brown, who watched his side suffer their fifth successive defeat.

The Vikings celebrated their first Super League victory over their neighbours, who fell apart after sweeping into an early 12-6 lead.

Widnes ran in three tries in a five-minute spell to go ahead 28-12 at the break and Saints could not find a way back.

Saints, whose last win was against Castleford Tigers on Easter Monday, were missing Sol Soliola, Francis Meli, Jonny Lomax, Mark Flanagan, Paul Clough and the suspended Jon Wilkin but Ade Gardner, Willie Manu and Josh Perry made welcome returns.

Widnes, pipped 16-4 at home by Saints in February, were not helped by injuries suffered in last week's home defeat by Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, with Rhys Hanbury, Patrick Ah Van, Willie Isa and Ben Cross all absent.

But Dave Allen, Stefan Marsh and Danny Craven returned with teenager Jack Owens taking over at full back and he ran in 16 points with two tries and four goals.

Steve Pickersgill shot through a gap almost straight from the kick-off but was recalled for a forward pass by skipper Jon Clarke.

But a high tackle on Perry handed Saints the initiative and they went ahead after only three minutes when Luke Thompson went over for a try on his home debut after collecting Tony Puletua's pass, with Tommy Makinson converting.

Widnes were back on level terms after nine minutes with Pickersgill taking Kevin Brown's pass to crash over with Owens levelling the scores.

Saints regained the lead with Anthony Laffranchi running onto a perfectly-weighted kick from Nathan Ashe and Makinson tagging on the conversion.

Pickersgill was prominent for Widnes, who almost drew level again when Mark Percival fumbled a Brown kick.

Saints' relief was short lived with Owens racing past Ashe and Paul Wellens on an angled 30-metre run and converting his own try to make it 12-12.

Widnes grew in confidence with Owens only denied a second try by Percival's high tackle before Clarke was then held up over the line.

It was no surprise when Clarke crossed the whitewash to fire the Vikings ahead for the first time before Joe Mellor's darting break sent Marsh over to add to Saints' troubles.

Widnes struck for the third time in five minutes when Marsh put Owens through with the youngster's conversion making it 28-12 at half-time.

Saints were jeered off at half-time but gave themselves some hope when Gardner, back from suspension, had a walk-in try after 47 minutes with Makinson converting off the touchline.

The next try was going to be vital but Widnes struck with Mellor latching onto Brown's kick as Widnes took a 34-18 lead after 56 minutes.

St Helens struggled to find a way through a resolute defence until Puletua found a chink 11 minutes from time.

Joe Greenwood hobbled off for Saints with Craven landing a drop goal in the 76th minute to clinch a long overdue win and although Alex Walmsley crashed over for a late Saints try to make the scoreline more respectable, it was too little, too late.
