Huddersfield Giants overcame the dismissal of scrum-half Luke Robinson to inflict only a second home defeat of the season on Catalan Dragons and close to within a point of Super League leaders Wigan Warriors.

The visitors were forced to play the last half-hour with 12 men after Robinson was sent off for what appeared to be a late and high tackle on Catalan full-back Morgan Escare.

They were trailing 16-14 at the time but rallied magnificently to produce a rousing finale and extend their winning run to five matches.

Centre Joe Wardle scored two of Huddersfield’s five tries but the architect of their impressive triumph was skipper Danny Brough, whose tactical kicking kept his side on the front foot for most of the match.

Huddersfield made a dream start, forcing a scrum from the kick-off when Catalan second rower Zeb Taia fumbled the ball into touch; Wardle duly touched down Brough's slide-rule kick within the first set of tackles.

A run of four penalties allowed the home side to put the Giants defence under pressure but the visitors held firm and, with Brough pinning the Dragons back with his clever kicking game, dominated the first half.

Right winger Jermaine McGillvary fluffed a glorious tryscoring opportunity by failing to pass to the supporting Scott Grix and centre Leroy Cudjoe got over the line only to be held up.

Huddersfield's persistence finally paid off on 32 minutes when Brough's long pass found left winger Aaron Murphy in oceans of space and he crossed for his eighth try of the season.

For the second time, Brough was unable to add the conversion and an 8-0 lead began to look flimsy as the Catalans sprang to life in the last five minutes of the first half.

Centre Jean-Philippe Baile, making his first Super League start of the season in the absence of six injured experienced first-teamers, managed to force the ball down despite the efforts of three defenders to claim an opportunist try on 36 minutes.

Huddersfield were still recovering from that blow when the exciting Escare went through a gap in their defence to send hooker Eloi Pelissier over for a second try; Thomas Bosc's goal edged the Dragons into a 10-8 interval lead.

The game appeared to slip further away from the visitors three minutes into the second half when Taia won the race to Leon Pryce's kick to the line.

Bosc's second goal made it 16-8 but a touch of magic from Brough got the Giants back in contention.

The brilliant stand-off re-gathered his own kick over the defence to get second-rower Brett Ferres into space and Wardle was in support to finish off an 80-metre move with his second try.

Brough's touchline conversion cut the gap to just two points but the game looked to turn on the dismissal of Robinson.

However, Bosc was wide with the resulting penalty and Huddersfield were back in front on the hour thanks to another long-range try and a defensive howler by Kevin Larroyer.

Hooker Shaun Lunt pierced the Dragons' first line of defence and took a return pass from Grix. Larroyer got a hand to the ball to prevent Cudjoe finishing off the move but failed to clear the danger and the England centre followed up to touch down.

Brough kicked his second goal to open up a 20-16 lead but the scores were level four minutes later when Taia's pass created an overlap for Frederic Vaccari to cross.

Bosc failed with the conversion attempt - his third miss from five - and Brough restored his side's lead with a penalty after Catalan were pulled up for an illegal ball steal on Grix.

The visitors then put the seal on a splendid victory when Lunt forced his way over from dummy half for his 13th try of the season and Brough kicked his fourth goal.
