Salford City Reds were unable to celebrate the appointment of new boss Brian Noble as Hull FC notched their third win in a row to climb into the top eight.

Hull ran in four tries, including a Richard Whiting double, to leave the Reds next-to-bottom of the Super League table.

Salford owner Marwan Koukash announced to the fans before kick-off that Noble, the odds-on favourite for the job, would succeed Phil Veivers who was sacked last month.

Noble, the former Bradford Bulls, Wigan Warriors, Crusaders RL and Great Britain coach, will be in charge for the first time in next Sunday's Tetley's Challenge Cup tie at the University of Gloucester All Golds.

Salford welcomed back skipper Martin Gleeson and Ashley Gibson in the centre with Danny Williams returning on the wing.

But Hull were missing Danny Tickle, Ben Galea and Tom Briscoe as well as long-term absentees Gareth Ellis, Brett Seymour and ex Salford stand-off Daniel Holdsworth.

The Reds made a flying start after Jay Pitts was sin-binned for obstruction with Theo Fages' long pass allowing Gleeson to put Williams over in the corner after only four minutes and Mark Sneyd booted the touchline conversion.

Salford, who have now won only six of the 25 Super League matches between the clubs, had notched just one victory in their previous six matches since Alan Hunte was placed in temporary charge after Veivers' dismissal.

They suffered a blow midway through the first half when Adam Neal made way with an arm injury and Hull immediately drew level.

Ben Crooks hacked the ball forward after a pass from Joe Arundel and won the race to the line for Joe Westerman to convert.

Hull went ahead almost straight from the restart with Richard Horne putting Whiting over to make it 12-6.

Young Niall Evalds was impressive at full-back for Salford, comfortably dealing with a barrage of high kicks.

But Hull dominated possession and should have led by more than 12-6 at half-time.

Peter Gentle's men increased their advantage early in the second half with Tom Lineham pouncing onto Whiting's kick and Westerman landing the touchline conversion.

A storming break by Fages gave Salford a lift before Gareth Owen nipped over to cut the gap to 18-12 after 57 minutes.

But Hull could breathe more comfortably when Whiting charged down Sneyd's clearance kick for his second try.

Whiting hobbled off nine minutes from time but had already sealed the Reds' fate.

Hull also had Arundel helped off in the 77th minute to take some of the gloss of a hard-earned victory, while Jodie Broughton raced the full length of the field for a last-gasp Salford try.
