Morgan Escare pressed his claims for a World Cup spot as Catalan Dragons condemned St Helens to a third defeat in four games.

Catalans, sporting shaven heads in support of a children's cancer charity, were a cut above their hosts as they rounded off a week's camp in Manchester with an impressive third away victory of the season.

The 22-year-old Escare, who got his chance when Brent Webb was ruled out for the season, scored his fourth try in just five Super League appearances and looked an accomplished full-back in attack and defence.

The Dragons were also indebted to experienced half-backs Thomas Bosc and Leon Pryce, who easily got the better of Lance Hohaia and Jon Wilkin –  Saints' sixth different half-back pairing of the season.

The return of Hohaia enabled skipper Paul Wellens to embark upon his new role at loose forward but his efforts were largely in vain as the Perpignan outfit bossed the show.

The Dragons were without French captain Olivier Elima and lost centre Daryl Millard, tryscoring hero of last year's 34-32 victory, with a leg injury midway through the first half but they generally had more attacking ideas.

Forwards Jason Baitieri and Remi Casty split the Saints defence with early breaks down the middle and the kicking game of former Saints favourite Pryce kept the home side pinned inside their own half for long periods.

The pressure eventually paid off when Louis Anderson combined with Millard to get winger Frederic Vaccari over at the corner after 26 minutes.

Bosc, who had earlier missed with a penalty attempt, kicked the touchline conversion and the visitors strengthened their grip in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

They looked to have scored again when Escare pounced on a loose ball after Saints substitute Joe Greenwood stole the ball in a one-on-one tackle on Casty but video referee Ben Thaler disallowed the score for a knock-on.

However, the promising Escare did get a try after collecting winger Damien Blanch's inside pass with the Saints defence in disarray.

Bosc added another difficult conversion to make it 12-0 at the break but Saints looked rejuvenated after coach Nathan Brown's pep talk and pulled a try back within seven minutes of the start of the second half.

Second rower Sia Soliola was put through a gap by Wilkin, who handled again before sending the New Zealander over for a glorious try, to which Mark Percival added the goal.

A 54th-minute penalty by scrum-half Bosc, awarded for offside, punctured Saints' momentum and the Catalans almost went further in front shortly afterwards when Pryce was put clear by his half-back partner but was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Hohaia.

Bosc kicked a second penalty on the hour after St Helens prop Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook was punished for interference at the play-the-ball to keep his side on the front foot.

Catalans were reduced to 12 men on 66 minutes as prop Mickael Simon was sin-binned for preventing a quick play-the-ball following Tom Makinson's break out of defence and Saints substitute Alex Walmsley, one of their better players, gave his side brief hope when he crashed over for a try four minutes from the end.

Percival's second goal cut the gap to just four but Catalan hooker Ian Henderson made sure of the points when he forced his way over from close range for a last-minute try, with Bosc kicking his fifth goal.
