Rhys Hanbury turned in a fine performance as Widnes Vikings moved six points clear of bottom club Castleford Tigers with an emphatic Super League win over Salford City Reds.

The Australian full-back scored three tries and set up several others to leave the Reds still seeking their first away win of the season.

The Vikings crossed 10 times in all, Cameron Phelps also notching a hat-trick and Jack Owens booting nine goals.

Widnes welcomed back Hanbury, Phelps, Eamon O'Carroll and Jon Clarke after their Easter Monday drubbing at Huddersfield Giants, with Kevin Brown also returning following a five-match lay off.

Still absent for the Vikings were Willie Isa, Stefan Marsh, Patrick Ah Van and Ben Cross.

There was no place in the Salford side for former St Helens prop Jake Emmitt, signed from Castleford in exchange for Ryan Boyle.

Skipper Martin Gleeson failed a fitness test on a calf injury after missing the Easter win over Huddersfield Giants and defeat at Bradford Bulls, with Ashley Gibson, Danny Williams, Vic Mauro and Shannan McPherson also missing.

Widnes headed into the clash with an impressive home record this season, losing only one of their four matches at the Stobart Stadium.

They made a flying start with Hanbury sprinting on to Brown's well-judged kick in the second minute and Owens booting the touchline conversion.

Salford had a let off when Hanbury had a second try disallowed for offside from another Brown kick.

It was Salford's turn to have a score chalked off soon after when Adam Neal was held up over the line from Wayne Godwin's short pass.

Widnes hit back immediately, Clarke taking Owens' inside pass to stretch the advantage to 10-0 after 13 minutes.

Salford lost recent signing Lee Gaskell with a leg injury to hamper their cause, after which the Vikings added a third try when Owens took Hanbury's smart off-load to send Phelps over midway through the first half.

The City Reds opened their account with a fortunate try after Marc Sneyd's kick bounced favourably for Theo Fages to touch down and cut the gap to 16-6.

Lee Jewitt then plunged over from short range, Sneyd's second conversion reducing the Widnes lead to four points after 32 minutes.

But the hosts breathed a little easier after Ben Kavanagh's storming midfield break saw Alex Gerrard put Hanbury over for his second try to make it 22-12.

Phelps touched down from Hanbury's inside pass to leave Widnes in control at 28-12 in front at the break.

Any faint hopes of a Salford comeback faded early in the second period with Hanbury's break setting up a try for Joe Mellor and Owens booting his fifth conversion.

Hanbury completed his treble and produced a scorching break to give Phelps his hat-trick either side of Jodie Broughton's long-range breakaway try.

Jordan James added a fourth score for the Reds after 66 minutes but Widnes replied through Frank Winterstein before Brown celebrated his comeback with the final touchdown.
