Huddersfield Giants regained top spot in Super League by running in seven tries in their first win at Castleford Tigers for four years.

Winger Jermaine McGilvary bagged two tries and half-back Danny Brough kicked six goals as the Giants avenged last season's 52-6 hammering by the Tigers to move one point clear of Wigan Warriors at the head of the table.

The Tigers, without a win in nine games, scored 18 points in the last four minutes, but they remain at the foot of the table after a dreadful first-half show.

Despite taking an early lead, Castleford trailed 28-6 at half-time after conceding five tries in a 17-minute spell, including two while England stand-off Rangi Chase was in the sin-bin.

Prop Ryan Boyle went straight into Castleford's team on the bench after rejoining his hometown club this week from Salford City Reds.

Lee Gilmour returned to his face his old club Huddersfield, taking over from the suspended Justin Carney.

The Giants recalled veteran prop Stuart Fielden in place of the banned Eorl Crabtree, while Jason Chan was their only injury absentee.

Castleford, who have now lost their last seven matches, quickly came under pressure after conceding two penalties in the first two minutes.

Huddersfield's Leroy Cudjoe was halted just short, but the visitors wasted an excellent position when they lost the ball the next tackle.

They were made to pay when the Tigers swept upfield to snatch a third-minute lead, Chase's clever pass sending in Oliver Holmes for a try that Jamie Ellis converted.

With former Tigers player Brough dictating play, the game was then turned on its head as the Giants replied with a 28-point scoring burst.

Weller Hauraki and Richard Owen both did well to deal with teasing kicks from Brough before Huddersfield levelled in the 11th minute as Shaun Lunt forced his way over from acting half close to the line after Craig Kopczak was tackled just short.

The Giants quickly struck again when Castleford prop Jonathan Walker's pass went to ground on the last tackle and Joe Wardle scooped up the loose ball before racing 75 yards to score.

Three minutes later the Tigers fell further behind when ex-Castleford player Brett Ferres sent in Aaron Murphy, with Chase being sin-binned for dissent immediately after.

The Giants capitalised on their numerical advantage by adding two more tries while the Tigers were down to 12 men.

McGilvary fended off two tacklers and sprinted 70 yards to score before Cudjoe sent in Luke Robinson and Brough added his fourth goal to put Huddersfield 28-6 up.

A brief flare-up shortly before half-time resulted in referee Phil Bentham speaking to Chase and Huddersfield's Scott Grix.

The Tigers started the second half strongly, but missed a golden chance when Hauraki fumbled the ball on the try line after Chase had created the opening.

Huddersfield's Jamie Cording then had an effort ruled out by video referee Ian Smith because Castleford full-back Jordan Tansey was impeded as he attempted to gather Brough's high kick.

It was only temporary respite for the Tigers because they were soon punished for losing possession when Huddersfield hacked the ball on and the speedy McGilvary caught Owen napping by pouncing for his second touchdown.

The Giants shot further ahead three minutes later when Ferres went over from Murphy's pass for a try against his former club.

Huddersfield's Cording was sin-binned in the 64th minute for holding down and Castleford looked as though they would capitalise when Owen burst clear, but he was foiled by Grix's try-saving tackle.

The Tigers continued to press but were let down by poor handling until they made the score more respectable with three late tries.

Adam Milner scored from acting half, Walker's break led to Daryl Clark grabbing a 50-yard try and Walker also powered over, with Ellis adding all three conversions, but it was too little too late to rescue Castleford.
