The English Lions entertained a huge 5,000 strong crowd as they comfortably defeated the Canada Wolverines in the first ever meeting between the two countries.

The Lions – coached by Jimmy Taylor for the penultimate time – produced a clinical display in which a 90% completion rate was far too good for a brave home side.

Wigan St Patrick’s Tony Suffolk set the ball rolling with the game’s opening try and further opening quarter efforts from Oliver Johnson (2) and Jordan Precious put the tourists in complete control.

Southampton winger Johnson completed his hat-trick in the second half as Caldon Bravo, Nathan Kitson, Mark Donnelly and Mathew Meadon all joined in the scoring.

Cheered on by the large crowd the Wolverines kept battling away and did get some reward when Tony Felix raced over, however, the Lions soon restored order and registered more touchdowns from Stephen King (2), Ryan Smith and man-of-the-match Tony Baker.

Precious and Kitson added most of the conversions between them, although the final scoring act was Sean Wildbore’s conversion as the captain brought his Lions career to a close.

The Lions will complete the groundbreaking trip with a game against a Canada Development side on Wednesday.
