Danny McGuire delivered a man-of-the-match performance on his final Leeds appearance to inspire the Rhinos to a record-extending eighth Betfred Super League title.

Castleford Tigers had won their previous eight meetings with their neighbours and eased to League Leaders’ Shield success.

But the Tigers had no answer to Grand Final experts Leeds on their maiden Old Trafford appearance as they fell to a 24-6 defeat.

Tom Briscoe gave Leeds an 11th-minute lead and they went into the break with a 7-0 advantage courtesy of McGuire’s drop goal.

The Hull KR-bound half-back added a brace of tries and another one-pointer either side of Briscoe’s second try to cap a fine individual display, although Leeds old boy Alex Foster had the last word.

McGuire, who claimed a second Harry Sunderland Trophy in three years, said: "It's a fairytale ending. I thought the boys from one to 17 were unbelievable.

"We spoke all week about leaving everything out there and the lads did that. The commitment to the cause and work ethic was unbelievable.

"My job is to steer the team round and it's easy when you've got players willing to run through brick walls for you.

"I was really determined to make sure my Leeds career finished on a really positive note and we've won a Grand Final so you can't get any better."

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell said: "It was tough conditions but wow, you couldn't get a grip of what we were doing with the ball. I didn't think we could get worse with ball retention but we made 10 errors in the second half.

"I'm disappointed we didn't do ourselves justice. If we'd done that and got beat then you can hold your hands up and say 'fair enough'.

"Leeds didn't see the best of us tonight and massively deserved the win. But they didn't have much to beat.

"That's the biggest disappointment from our perspective - that we didn't put up enough of a battle because of our ball retention."
