Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions are the latest clubs to announce their desire to act as host towns for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

The Engage Super League champions have come together with their Championship neighbours and the local council to formally launch a bid to bring matches to the DW Stadium and Leigh Sports Village.

Wigan Council leader Lord Smith said: “As well as generating international talent, sport in the borough has genuine grass-roots support and links into the wider community.

“The council is a stakeholder in the DW Stadium and Leigh Sports Village and, together with our partners, we’re relishing the chance to see international rugby in our stadia.”

Warrington Wolves, Bradford Bulls and Rochdale Hornets are other clubs to express an interest in staging matches.

The Rugby Football League recently held a series of seminars on the subject and are due to announce the venues in the autumn.
