RFL Head of Participation to climb Kilimanjaro
The RFL’s Head of Participation, Julia Lee will attempt to scale Kilimanjaro next week to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund, a charity which aims to support players whose lives are affected by serious injuries sustained while playing Rugby League.
Kilimanjaro is the highest trekking mountain in the world with a summit of 5,896m and ascending the peak is an extreme challenge incorporating a high element of risk.
Julia Lee said: “There are a number of reasons why I have decided to battle with my fears and fitness. Firstly and most importantly I want to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund.
“I also needed a challenge which would test my mental and physical fitness. I want to overcome my fear of heights and a goal to improve my fitness.
“I know it’s all a bit extreme but I never wanted an easy life!”
As Head of Participation at the RFL, Julia works alongside the RFL’s Regional Managers to deliver the community strategy.
The Community Strategy outlines how the investment from Sport England and the RFL will be used to increase the number of teams and increase the sport’s geographical spread in England.
Targets include delivering 53,000 participants over 16 and 30,000 participants under 16 as well as maintaining an 80 per cent customer satisfaction rating.
The role involves working directly with Sport England and reporting on the Whole Sport Plan as well as working closely with a variety of other national partners including the Youth Sport Trust.
The Head of Participation has responsibility for delivering the key performance indicators, developing a highly trained workforce in the regions and managing the delivery of the 30 projects as well as increasing the visibility and profile of the game.
