New role for Clarke
Widnes Vikings have appointed captain Jon Clarke as their new head of strength and conditioning.
Clarke, 35, who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season and will play his last home game against Wigan Warriors on Friday night, says he turned down offers from rival First Utility Super League clubs to stay with the Vikings.
Clarke said: "It's a massive appointment for me and it's what I've been working towards for the last four or five years.
"To move into a role like this straight from playing is brilliant for me and I feel very privileged. It's a job that I can't wait to do and I'm really excited about the future and working with this group of players.
"I did have the opportunity to move away from Widnes Vikings to take up similar roles elsewhere but my loyalty is with the club and I never considered going anywhere else as I feel we are building something really special with a great group of people and to be a part of that is important to me."
Clarke, who has also played for Wigan, London Broncos and Warrington Wolves in a 17-year career, received a 2:1 in sport and exercise science (SES) and later an MSc in sports science from the University of Chester.
