York City Knights 34-30 Gateshead Thunder
Knights fend off Thunder fightback
Kingstone Press Championship 1 leaders York survived a late onslaught against Gateshead to shade a high-scoring contest 34-30.
Both sides scored six tries, with three of the Thunder's scores coming in the final 10 minutes, yet the Knights had done enough to record a win which keeps second-places Hunslet at arm's length in the table.
The teams traded tries in the first period - Ben Dent and James Saltonstall going over for York, Matty Beharrell and Jason Payne for Gateshead - but the hosts would go into the interval ahead thanks to a last-gasp try from Josh Tonks.
Jack Aldous, Ryan Backhouse and Saltonstall all crossed the whitewash in the second period with Joe Brown's try for the Thunder keeping them in contention.
The north-east outfit found another gear late on and scored tries through Jordan Meads, Matt Barron and Lee Mapals, but the fact Beharrell only added conversions to half of the six tries proved crucial.
