Workington Town 20-18 Whitehaven RLFC
Town up to sixth
Workington continued their great escape in the Kingstone Press Championship with a seventh successive win.
Town, whose last defeat was at Halifax in June, held on for a 20-18 win over Whitehaven in the west Cumbria derby at Derwent Park to climb to sixth place in the table, six points clear of their local rivals who remain in trouble in the fifth relegation spot.
Whitehaven led 16-12 after 55 minutes thanks to tries from centre Jessie Joe Parker and wingers Shaun Ainscough and Craig Calvert, plus two goals from Cain Southernwood, in response to first-half tries from Declan Hulme and Peter Lupton.
Full-back Lewis Tierney, one of four Wigan players turning out on a dual-registration for Phil Veivers' side, restored Workington's lead with a try on the hour and, after Southernwood had kicked the visitors level, Carl Forber landed a late penalty goal to edge his side to a precious victory.
