Biggest ever Touch RL roadshow hits the Magic Weekend
Thousands of people will have the chance to test out their ball skills as the Play Touch Rugby League roadshow visits Magic Weekend at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Saturday and Sunday (May 17 and 18).
A giant inflatable pitch will be outside the ground on Saturday, giving fans of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try their hand at the newest format of their favourite sport.
Play Touch Rugby League is simply a fast-paced, minimal-contact version of the game that the professionals will be playing over the weekend.
After sampling Play Touch Rugby League, fans will also be able to sign up for local sessions across the country.
The new format of the game is a great alternative to the gym - participants can have fun getting fit whilst enjoying the excitement and camaraderie of the traditional game but without high impact tackling. Played in a fun and sociable environment, men and women can also play side by side.
Castleford Tigers second row Weller Hauraki is an ambassador for the sport and believes it is a great way to get involved in playing Rugby League, in a relaxed environment. Hauraki, who plays Play Touch Rugby League regularly, created a team with Wakefield Wildcats player Ali Lauitiiti and Warrington Wolves assistant coach Willie Poaching.
“I was really happy to help out and it has turned into something I really enjoy,” said Hauraki. “The game helps with my fitness and just gives me that little bit extra alongside my professional playing career. Anyone who enjoys Rugby League but is not too keen on the physical contest should get involved. It’s such a fun sport.”
After taking Play Touch Rugby League on the road to various First Utility Super League and Kingstone Press Championship matches during March and April, Magic Weekend is the biggest showcase of the sport to date.
Over 40 staff will be based in the Fan Zone, giving out information and answering any questions potential players may have.
Play Touch Rugby League is already proving popular across the country, with over 50 venues now offering the programme. If you would like to get involved, find your nearest Play Touch Rugby League venue at www.playtouchrugbyleague.co.uk.
