Tomkins makes Salford loan move

New Salford head coach Iestyn Harris has returned to his old club Wigan Warriors to make his first signing for the Red Devils.

New Salford head coach Iestyn Harris has returned to his old club Wigan Warriors to make his first signing for the Red Devils.

Harris, who left his role as Wigan assistant coach on Friday, has signed Warriors hooker Logan Tomkins on a month's loan and is set to make his debut in Friday's game at Bradford Bulls.

Tomkins, the 21-year-old brother of England internationals Sam and Joel, recently made three consecutive starts for Wigan for the first time in the absence of Michael McIlorum through suspension, but lost his place when McIlorum returned for last Friday's Challenge Cup tie at Dewsbury.

Harris said: "I am confident that Logan will enjoy a successful period here with us. I have worked with him and his brothers in the past. I know the strengths of his game well and can't wait for him to join us here."

Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash added: "We would like to go on record asserting our gratitude to Wigan Warriors and their owner and chairman Ian Lenegan for giving us the opportunity to work with such a bright young talent.

"We are very excited about Logan joining us, and hope he can have an immediate impact on the field."

Tomkins will be eligible to play for Salford against Wigan on May 22 if he is still on loan by then, but will not be allowed to become cup-tied by appearing in their fifth-round clash with Widnes Vikings later this month

Wigan's rugby manager Kris Radlinski said: "We are comfortable for Logan to join Salford on a one-month loan deal and know he will be looked after by their coaching staff.

"This agreement will allow Logan the opportunity to get some important game time in Super League under his belt in the next four weeks. With the versatility of George Williams and Sam Powell set to return shortly after injury, we feel we have cover in the hooking and half back role.

"Logan will also benefit from the experience of playing some first team rugby elsewhere in a different environment for a short while."
