Scorpions game abandoned

Third-tier South Wales Scorpions' opening match of the season against Oldham was called off on Sunday after players needed treatment for "hypothermia-like symptoms".

The Welsh side revealed on their official website that the match was abandoned after 72 minutes by referee Adam Gill as the players from both sides suffered in cold conditions in Bridgend.

Oldham had been leading the Kingstone Press Championship One match 18-4 when it was called off.

"On 72 minutes referee Adam Gill called a halt to proceedings as many players were suffering from hypothermia-like symptoms," a match report on the Scorpions' official website read.

"It was a shame for the 458-strong crowd, many of whom were Maesteg locals, but the rain had been pouring down from kick-off and soon what was a shower turned into a full-blown monsoon making any attractive rugby impossible.

"When both physios were called on to treat a number of players, the referee ended things and the Rugby Football League will decide later this week whether the result will stand."

Scores from Dale Bloomfield and Adam Files, both converted by Sam Gee, handed the visitors a 12-0 half-time lead.

Alex Jones got the Scorpions back into the game with a try four minutes after the interval before Steven Nield's four-pointer and a goal from Liam Palfrey saw Oldham comfortably ahead before the clash was called off.
