A fantastic £10,000 was raised for the ongoing work of Rugby League Cares at the charity's first ever fundraising dinner on Friday night at the John Smith's Stadium in Huddersfield.

Heritage is one of the key elements of RL Cares' work and the dinner was organised as part of the ongoing World Cup celebrations, prior to the sold out England-Ireland game. The event featured an exhibition from the Rugby League Archive to illustrate the important work underway by the charity to preserve and increase access to the history of the game.

As part of the evening four new members were inducted to the Rugby League Hall of Fame. The sport's top all-time point scorer Neil Fox MBE welcomed on stage Lewis Jones, Martin Offiah MBE, Garry Schofield OBE and Mick Sullivan to become to the latest Hall of Famers.

The 21 members of the Hall of Fame are Eric Ashton MBE, Billy Batten, Brian Bevan, Billy Boston MBE, Douglas Clarke MM, Neil Fox MBE, Ellery Hanley, MBE. Martin Hodgson, Lewis Jones, Vince Karalius, Roger Millward MBE, Alex Murphy OBE, Martin Offiah MBE, Jonty Parkin, Gus Risman, Albert Rosenfeld, Garry Schofield, Mick Sullivan, Jim Sullivan, Tom Van Vollenhoven, Harold Wagstaff.

Support for past players is an important part of the work of Rugby League Cares, with grants and individual help provided to those in need. There was a fantastic response to the dinner with many of the sports former greats in attendance to lend their personal support to the fundraising activities.

Thanks to the great support from those attending and a wide range of organisations including BBC Sport, SKY Sports, Kelvin Fletcher and ITV’s Emmerdale, Marriott Hotels, The Lindley Group, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Welcome to Yorkshire, the event raised £10,000 to support the work of Rugby League Cares.

Throughout the duration of the 2013 World Cup the trade newspaper League Weekly will be featuring the work of the Rugby League Cares charity. League Weekly will also donate part of all sales of the new online edition to the cause.
