Wood hails a Championships Finals Day to remember
RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood has congratulated Sheffield Eagles, Rochdale Hornets and Leigh Miners Rangers on their victories in today’s Kingstone Press Championships Final Day at Leigh Sports Village.
Sheffield came from 12-0 behind to defeat Batley Bulldogs 19-12 and become the first club to successfully defend the Kingstone Press Championship title whilst Rochdale clinched promotion from Championship One with a 32-18 defeat of Oldham in the Play-off Final.
Earlier in the day Leigh Miners Rangers won the Rugby League Conference Challenge Trophy Final with a 42-14 victory over Wigan St Patricks.
“My congratulations go out to all three clubs on their victories in what was a terrific day of Rugby League,” said Wood.
“Sheffield’s win was a particularly fine achievement given that they had to come from so far behind to retain the title against opponents who gave it their all.
“The victory against their local rivals will have made Rochdale’s victory more special for them and, having won their first trophy in over 90 years, the Hornets fully deserve to join Championship One champions North Wales Crusaders in taking the step up to the Championship in 2014.
“The quality of Rugby League throughout a memorable finals days was first class from the outset and a keenly contested Challenge Trophy which Leigh Miners Rangers won in some style.
“I would like to thank all six clubs, their supporters and sponsors Kingstone Press for the role they played in a very special day for the sport which marked a fitting end to the company’s successful first season as title sponsors.
"The atmosphere within Leigh Sports Village was terrific, and I’m sure that will again be the case when the stadium hosts Tonga v Cook Islands in the Rugby League World Cup on November 5."
“With the big kick-off of RLWC2013 and England’s showdown with Australia at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium just a few short weeks away, there has never been a better time to be a Rugby League supporter.”
