Former England full back Shaun Briscoe today announced his retirement from professional Rugby League after an illustrious 11-year career.

Briscoe (30) has played for hometown Wigan Warriors, Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers – becoming only the sixth player to make 100 appearances for both Humberside clubs – Widnes Vikings and Workington Town.

He explained: “Having been capped for England and enjoying a fulfilling Super League career, I have decided to hang up my boots to pursue a new chapter in the game.  I owe a lot to Rugby League and can now hopefully put something back.

“I would like to thank the coaches, backroom staff, players and fans who have helped and supported me through my career, and most of all my family who have sacrificed a lot to enable me to do what I have achieved.”

Briscoe’s honours include nine appearances for England, six for England A, a Great Britain Academy tour to Australia in 2002, being named Super League Young Player of the Year and a member of the Dream Team in 2004, and vice-captaincy of Hull Kingston Rovers and Widnes Vikings.  He was granted a Testimonial by the RFL in March 2013.

Briscoe made his Super League debut in July 2002 with Wigan, making 29 appearances and scoring 11 tries before moving to Hull FC in December 2003.

At the KC Stadium, he played 103 games, touching down 57 times, before crossing the city in December 2008 to join arch rival Hull Kingston Rovers, for whom he made 100 appearances, scoring 30 tries.

After a four-year stay at Craven Park, Briscoe joined Widnes Vikings on a two-year contract, but his service was marred by injury and he parted company in the latter part of the 2013 season, playing out his career with Championship side Workington Town after being dual registered with them.
