Featherstone on the brink

Featherstone are 80 minutes away from retaining the league leaders' shield in the Kingstone Press Championship after securing a thrilling 40-24 win over long-time table-toppers Sheffield Eagles.

Sheffield, the reigning champions, went into Wednesday night's re-arranged match at the Bigfellas Stadium three points clear, but failed to pick up a bonus point and dropped to second on points difference going into Sunday's final round of fixtures.

Featherstone, who lost to Sheffield in last season's Grand Final, ended their opponents' 15-match unbeaten run. They go to relegation-threatened Hunslet on the last day, while the Eagles visit Doncaster.

Sheffield, whose previous league defeat was at Whitehaven on April 1, thought they had secured a crucial bonus point when late tries from Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Matt Garside cut Rovers' lead to 10 points, but they left empty handed when winger Will Sharp struck with 21 seconds left.

The Eagles had earlier led 12-6 thanks to first-half tries from Laulu-Togage and Michael Knowles.

Featherstone's other try-scorers were Tim Spears, Matt James, Jonny Hepworth, Andy Kain, Ian Hardman and James Lockwood, while Liam Finn kicked six goals.
