Rochdale Hornets 25-30 Oldham RLFC
Brave Hornets edged out by Oldham
Oldham have stretched their lead at the top of the Kingstone Press Championship 1 with a hard-fought 30-25 victory at Rochdale Hornets.
The table-toppers scored five tries, with Lewis Palfrey adding the extras, while the hosts crossed over for four of their own, with Paul Crook adding four successful kicks and a drop goal.
Within the first ten minutes the tone was set for this pulsating encounter, as first Palfrey touched down to nudge the visitors in front before Danny Yates got the Hornets back on level terms just two minutes later.
This quick-fire scoring feat was repeated again just before half time, with Wayne English's try giving Rochdale the lead only for Liam Gilchrist to restore parity three minutes later.
It looked destined to remain level at the break until Crook slotted a drop goal on the stroke of half time to give the Hornets a slender 13-12 advantage.
But Oldham came out and proved their mettle during a decisive 20-minute spell after the restart that saw Liam Thompson, Danny Langtree and Chris Clarke all go over to seemingly end the contest.
Rochdale managed to battle back to set up a thrilling finale with two tries in three minutes from Gareth Langley and Daniel Davies, but Oldham had just about enough to get over the line.
