Wembley legends statue update
The RFL have confirmed today (August 5, 2013) that the unveiling of the Rugby League Statue at Wembley Stadium is now planned to take place ahead of the 2014 Tetley’s Challenge Cup Final.
The project is well advanced and the sculptor, Steve Winterburn, who has been commissioned to produce the statue, has been working with the subjects and their relatives on the composition that will feature Rugby League legends Billy Boston, Eric Ashton, Martin Offiah, Gus Risman and Alex Murphy.
While it had been initially hoped to have the project completed by November 2013, the three living subjects and families of Eric Ashton and Gus Risman have been informed of the new planned unveiling date.
The RFL has been in discussions with Wembley Stadium throughout the process and have undertaken detailed work to analyse issues, such as the flow of crowds around the statue to achieve the best siting. These issues are well advanced and the RFL are moving to submit detailed plans for planning permission.
Fund raising has been on-going alongside this work and the RFL has managed to secure significant amounts towards the required final total.
A spokesman for the RFL said; “This is a complex project and the most important thing is to get all the details of the project right.
“We are pleased that a great deal has already been achieved but we are conscious that we will not be able to have everything in place for November and therefore we will continue to progress the necessary planning process and other details to complete the work in time for an unveiling ceremony at Wembley ahead of next year’s Tetley’s Challenge Cup Final.”
