Wigan move for Pettybourne

Wigan Warriors have signed New Zealand-born forward Eddy Pettybourne on a two-year contract.

Wigan Warriors have signed New Zealand-born forward Eddy Pettybourne on a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old will join the Warriors from Wests Tigers for the start of pre-season training in November and help plug the gaps caused by the end-of-season departures of Lee Mossop and Chris Tuson and the retirement of Paul Prescott.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane said: "Eddy is a player I have admired for many years from his time at South Sydney and presently Wests Tigers.

"Due to his powerful running style, aggression in defence and his overall desire to compete, I am sure he will become a firm favourite with our fans."

Wigan's former full-back Kris Radlinski, now the club's rugby manager, secured the signing on his recent visit to Australia.

"Eddy has been on our radar for some time, being a favourite of Shaun Wane," Radlinski said.

"When his representative mentioned his name to me over the Magic Weekend, we knew that we had to go all out to get him.

"I met him in Sydney last week and I could tell from his body language and by the questions that he was asking that he was excited at the opportunity.

"This is a great signing for the club of a player at the peak of his career."

Pettybourne, who spent five seasons with South Sydney before joining Wests this year, was a late call-up for New Zealand for the 2009 Four Nations Series in England, but did not get a game and is hoping to represent Samoa in this year's World Cup.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to this new challenge with the Wigan club.

"I just feel the time is right now as I have always been interested in playing overseas and I feel I have plenty to offer.

"I have spoken to Shaun Wane and have been extremely impressed in what he has had to say.

"It's very exciting and I am looking forward to joining Wigan but at the same time I will be focused on doing my very best for the Wests Tigers for the remainder of this season."

Wigan are also tracking Sydney Roosters full-back Anthony Minichiello, who is out of contract this year.

"I've had interest from Wigan," said Minichiello, a former Kangaroo international who will captain Italy in their World Cup warm-up match against England on October 19.

"I come off contract this year but my main focus is playing for the Roosters. I'll look at all my options in the next month or two and see what comes of it."
