Bulls swoop for Carvell

Bradford Bulls have announced the signing of Warrington Wolves and England prop Garreth Carvell for 2014.

Bradford Bulls have announced the signing of Warrington Wolves and England prop Garreth Carvell for 2014.

The 32-year-old former Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC forward, who was in the Wolves team that beat Wigan Warriors last night, will join the Bulls on a two-year deal when his contract expires at the end of November.

Carvell, who has helped Warrington win the Challenge Cup three times in his five seasons at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, is a member of England coach Steve McNamara's elite training squad and was 18th man for the recent win over the Exiles.

The capture of the vastly experienced front rower comes just four days after the sale of unsettled second rower Elliott Whitehead to Catalan Dragons.

"In general we've got a young squad and most of it is about providing belief," said Bradford coach Francis Cummins.

"We just need to take the next step and the experience that Garreth brings will be invaluable in this area.

"It's a different challenge that he's going to face here but obviously the desire must still be there because he is continually striving to improve his game.

"I have spoken to him about what we need and he's delighted to be coming on board."

Leeds-born Carvell began his professional career at Headingley in 1997 but made only a handful of appearances and left at the end of the 2000 season to join Hull FC following a loan spell at Gateshead Thunder.

He won the last of his four caps in the 2011 Four Nations Series Down Under as a replacement for injured tour captain Adrian Morley and was on stand-by for Morley against the Exiles earlier this month.

Bradford chairman Omar Khan said: "We are delighted to announce Garreth as our first new signing for next season.

"He will be a big addition to our pack and will be a big player for us.

"Francis has outlined the club's philosophy to him and what our culture is and he has bought into that. I am sure he will be a big success at the Bulls."
