Look out England, the Exiles are coming

Exiles Rugby League coach Brian McClennan has named a formidable and dynamic looking 19 man squad

Exiles Rugby League coach Brian McClennan has named a formidable and dynamic looking 19 man squad for the International Origin match against England at Warrington (Friday June 14).

The former New Zealand supremo includes four Warrington Wolves players, nine newcomers and only one Exiles ever-present in St Helens’ Sia Soliola, meaning that at least seven Super League players will make their Exiles bow.

Wolves captain Brett Hodgson, who led the Exiles to a 32-20 victory over England at Huddersfield last year, will again skipper the side. Team mates and compatriots Joel and Michael Monaghan, and Trent Waterhouse are also included.

The nine newcomers are Zeb Taia (Catalan Dragons), Travis Burns, Michael Dobson and Mickey Paea (Hull Kingston Rovers), Brett Delaney (Leeds Rhinos), Chris Bailey (London Broncos), Michael Monaghan (Warrington Wolves), Rhys Hanbury (Widnes Vikings) and Harrison Hansen (Wigan Warriors).

Exiles coach Brian McClennan said:

“This is a very strong squad – you’ve only got to look at the names of some of the players I’ve had to leave out to see that.

“And there’s no second game this year, so everything is riding on the one match. We’ll be giving it our best shot and England will have to be at their very best to beat us.

“For players on either side it’s their only representative opportunity before the Rugby League World Cup, so I expect a very intense battle. We’re aiming to put on a style of rugby that does the Exiles brand proud and I really hope the Warrington public come out and support the match in huge numbers.”

The squad will meet up at its Warrington base on Sunday night (June 9) and McClennan will announce his team to face England on Wednesday June 12.

The former Leeds Rhinos and New Zealand Warriors coach Brian McClennan, who coached the Rhinos to Super League successon 2008 and 2009, added:

“I had a great time coaching the Exiles two years ago and I’m looking forward to replicating the spirit we had in camp in 2011.”
