Richards to leave with Wane blessing
Points machine Pat Richards will not be at Wigan Warriors next season but coach Shaun Wane does not blame the winger for heading home to Australia.
The 32-year-old showed the Warriors what they will be missing in 2014 with a brilliant display during their 28-20 win at Hull FC last night, kicking six goals from six as Wigan moved three points clear at the top of the table.
It was further evidence of how valuable a player he is to them, not that it needs pointing out after seven and a half seasons that have returned close to 2,500 points.
He will be back in the shirt of Wests Tigers in 2014, however, and although coach Wane tried to keep the Ireland international, he accepts why he feels the time is right to go.
"He told me a couple of weeks ago that he was going and I really admire him," Wane said.
"He's a good man who has done a lot of things that people don't know about behind the scenes at this club, things in team meetings and things like that. He's an outstanding individual. I wanted to give him a new deal - I don't want him to go.
"But his kids are at an age where they are ready to start school and his mind was made up. I have kids, I know what it's like, so I understand it. Paddy has loved it here but he wants to go."
