Derby spice just nice for Cup hopeful Doran
Whitehaven’s Lee Doran can’t wait to lock-horns with rivals Workington Town this weekend when they meet in the fourth round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup at the Recreation Ground on Sunday (3.00).
Whitehaven have last the last six matches against their Cumbrian neighbours but Doran, who has been at the club for three seasons, is confident that they can buck the trend on Sunday and give the ‘Haven’ faithful something to really cheer.
“We’re all definitely looking forward to it,” said Doran. “Derby games are always special and the type of games that you look forward to playing in and to have that type of game in the Challenge Cup is extra special.
“It doesn’t get much better than drawing Workington. When we progressed from the last round we wanted a big game, and it doesn’t get much bigger than this – in terms of derby games you can’t get much closer than Workington and Whitehaven and it will be a great occasion.
“It’s massive for the fans as well. They’ve been with us through thick and thin and they’re very loud and very proud up in Cumbria.
“Because it means so much to them that rubs off on the players and we want to get that win for them, to get one over the local rivals and draw a big Super League club to give the fans something to really relish.”
Doran says the prospect of joining the elite of Super League in the last 16 and beyond is a huge incentive for everyone involved with the club.
“Financially it’s good for the club to keep progressing and for the players, there’s the incentive of getting Super League opposition in the competition and getting to test yourself against them and try and cause a famous upset – so progressing is something we all want to do,” he said.
“Playing in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup is something that all players enjoy. It’s the fantasy Cup – everyone dreams of playing in the final at Wembley – and we’ve got the chance to go one step closer towards that dream this weekend.”
