Huddersfield Giants captain Danny Brough insists the Super League leaders are no one-man team as he prepares to face his old club Hull FC at the John Smith’s Stadium tomorrow.

The goalkicking half-back produced a man-of-the-match performance to lead the Giants to a 32-8 rout of champions Leeds Rhinos, a week after slumping to a 43-18 home defeat by Bradford Bulls, a game Brough missed through illness.

The former Hull and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats player tormented the Rhinos with his tactical kicking as well as scoring one try and making four others, but he says it was all down to the hard work of his forwards.

“Personally it was probably one of my best performances for the Giants but I can’t play well without the help of the rest of the lads,” he said.

“As pleasing as it was for me, I was more pleased with the fact we bounced back from the Bradford result.

“We played a solid game in the conditions and, when the big lads get forward like they did, it is easier to kick off the back of them.”

Having beaten three of the big four - St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Leeds - in the opening six weeks of the season, Brough is urging his team not to let their concentration slip against Hull, who are currently outside the top eight after winning just two of their first six matches.

“We have just got to concentrate on the teams that perhaps aren’t in the top six,” he said.

“They are the teams we have slipped up on in the past and we need to make sure we prepare for every team exactly the same.”

Hull returned to winning ways with a 52-0 thrashing of Castleford Tigers a week ago but coach Peter Gentle knows they must raise their game even more to topple the leaders and he has no doubt where the biggest threat will come from.

“Everybody knows about the big forward pack they’ve got and how much time and space they’re giving Danny Brough and Luke Robinson in the halves,” he said.

“The challenge for us there is to come up against probably the form forward pack in the competition and the form half-back so it’s going to be a tough one.

“They’ve got a very good bench, too, so it will be a battle for 80 minutes and we need to match them in the forwards.”

Widnes Vikings coach Denis Betts is confident his side can erase the memory of last year’s 76-6 defeat when they take on Catalan Dragons in Perpignan tomorrow.

That was the club’s record Super League reverse but the Vikings are a much-improved team in their second season back in the top flight and Betts was delighted with the character they showed in coming from 20-4 down with 12 men to draw with Bradford last Friday.

“We expended a lot of energy against Bradford but the lads are feeling good and really looking forward to it,” he said.

“They are a group that enjoys each other’s company and they all get on.”

The Dragons are coming off the back of a 38-0 defeat at Wigan but have a proud record at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, where they remain unbeaten so far this year.

“Catalan are a different animal at home than on their travels,” Betts acknowledged.

“They’ll be hurting as a result of not scoring a point against Wigan and getting beat so convincingly but we know it will be a different ball game in Perpignan.

“We’re entering a difficult period of playing Catalan, Wigan and Warrington back-to-back but you’ve got to play everybody and there’s nobody we are afraid of.

“There’s a lot of confidence in the group at the moment.”
