Griffin turns down Salford switch

Leeds Rhinos prop Darrell Griffin has rejected the chance to join Salford City Reds on loan.

Leeds Rhinos prop Darrell Griffin has rejected the chance to join Salford City Reds on loan.

The former Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Huddersfield Giants and England front rower was a target for the City Reds as coach Phil Veivers looked to bolster his depleted squad before the arrival of overseas duo Liam Foran and Vic Mauro.

Veivers was hoping to have the Manly Sea Eagles pair available for Sunday's home game against Hull KR but they are still in Sydney waiting for their visas.

"We're in the queue," Veivers said. "We're hoping they get their passports back from the Embassy early next week so we can get them on a plane."

Griffin was a member of the Rhinos' Grand Final-winning team in October but has yet to make an appearance for Brian McDermott's team so far this year.

"He wants to stay and fight for his place," said Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington.

Veivers, meanwhile, expects to have winger Danny Williams and loose forward Stephen Wild back from injury this week and says new signing Martin Gleeson has a chance of making his debut after missing the first three games with a leg injury.
