Medway Dragons achieved an incredible three gold and one silver award at the 2012 Medway Sports Awards on Friday night winning Club, Junior Club and Junior Team of the Year.

The Awards encompass a huge array of sports and disciplines, individuals, teams and clubs from primary school to Olympic Athletes plus real legends who have given a lifetime to sport.

Medway Dragons were shortlisted in 6 of the 11 categories with two nominations in the Junior team section at Under 11 and Under 16. This was the biggest representation of any club.

The night got off to a great start when The Dragons under 16s were named as Junior Team of the Year.

Host Steve Backley highlighted the unprecedented Cup Treble as the Dragons swept the board in the London RL Junior League and a contingent of 13 players who represented London Broncos in the Super League Scholarship Programme.

After the interval, it was time for the major awards. The Dragons got a huge ovation when, being named by Paralympian Danny Crates, as Junior Club of the Year, he highlighted the opportunities for all to play and the fantastic achievements of the Junior Section of The Club in its five year history.

The Dragons won the big prize of night being awarded Club of the Year.

Steve Backley told the packed house at The Rochester Corn Exchange of the culture and purpose at the Dragons where everyone can belong and achieve incredible highs whilst belonging to a great family, in Medway and beyond.

Joe Coyd rounded off the night when he was awarded Silver in the Junior Sportsperson of the Year recognising his achievements in the running game for the Dragons, London RL and The Broncos in the running game and The Dragons and England in Wheelchair Rugby League when he finished as top try scorer in the 2012 Home Nations Championship.

Dragons Chairman John Stanforth, sitting with Club President Paul Clark had the opportunity to reflect on a remarkable evening, he said: “This is an historic day for our club and everyone who belongs to the Dragons, in whatever way, should be very proud of what we have achieved’

“This is a nice present, just seven days after our fifth birthday. We have a great platform to take the next steps in our development, as a club and as people, as we establish ourselves at the heart of our community.”

Medway Dragons 2013 launch is on Saturday 26 January 2013.
