Challenge Cup round-up

PILKINGTON RECS came agonisingly close to pulling off an upset before eventually going down 19-18 to NCL Division One outfit MILFORD MARLINS.
The inaugural North West Men’s League champions raced into a 10-0 lead but were denied a famous win thanks to a last minute Martin Loveridge penalty and field-goal from Josh Parle.
Danny Lynch scored two tries and kicked three goals for the St Helens side whilst Jamie Smith also crossed the whitewash.
The Marlins returned back across the Pennines having registered tries to Ryan Oxtoby, John Elkington and Adam Fairhead, with Loveridge contributing two conversions and the penalty.
EAST LEEDS got the better of BANK QUAY BULLS with a 38-17 success.
Jordan Normington, Jake Normington (2) and Lee Fisher crossed in the opening period for the West Yorkshire-based visitors, with Jason Priestley adding a couple of conversions.
Despite the points Easts only held a 20-16 half-time advantage but it was all one-way traffic in the second half as Joey Walkin, Jordan Normington – with two – and James Forsell went in. Nathan Conroy added a conversion.
It needed extra-time to separate HUNSLET OLD BOYS and WIDNES WEST BANK as the Leeds progressed 17-16.
Scrum-half Rocky Price was the hero as he kicked a difficult conversion seven minutes from time to send the game into the additional time, and four minutes into the extra-time he landed a field-goal that sent his side through on “golden-point”.
That was the only time the Old Boys had been in front as Bank took the lead after just four minutes with a try from centre Paul Curphy.
Hunslet levelled midway through the opening period thanks to Dan Harrison, but Widnes were 10-6 to the good by the interval after a try from Richard Hughes was goaled by Ste Mellor.
Luke O’Malley slotted over a penalty in the final seconds of the first half and the visitors added more points in the second period as Josh Simm touched down and Mellor goaled.
Despite been down to 11 men at one stage prop Melvyn Brown scored a solo try out of nothing and with Price improving it set him up for his match winning moment.
