Hornets claim NCL title

Wath Brow Hornets clinched the NCL title with a 22-6 Grand Final success over Myton Warriors.
In a tightly contested encounter at the Stobart Stadium, Widnes, both sides deserve great credit for a bruising finale to the season, with a three-minute period in the second half proving crucial as the Hornets grabbed two quick-fire tries.
Loose-forward Jamie Devine stretched over for the games first try in the tenth minute, whilst Peter Caddy tagged on the extras after missing with an earlier penalty.
With nothing to choose between the two sides the rest of the first half was tightly contested, however, with just a minute to go before the half-time Lee Fewlass brought the Hull side back into the contest as he crashed over for a try that Kris Walker improved to make it 6-6 at half-time.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with both sides testing each other out, and it took 15 minutes for the next points to arrive as Lewis McCarron collected a superb pass from man-of-the-match Leroy Joe to cross near the posts.
Caddy added the simple conversion but was off target just three minutes later when attempting to improve Francis King’s touchdown out wide, however, the Cumbrians had now opened a 16-6 lead.
Try as they might the Warriors just couldn’t get any change out of a resolute Hornets defence and as the game entered the final 10 minutes a sensational effort from Caddy sealed a famous win.
The winger collected a Myton grubber close to his own line and after rounding a tackle raced down the touchline for a brilliant effort which made sure the cup would head back up to Cleator Moor.
Caddy completed a memorable afternoon with a penalty in the closing minutes but by that time Myton were beaten.
