Johnson joins Hull revolution

Hull FC have signed Wakefield Trinity Wildcats prop Paul Johnson on a two-year deal, taking their number of signings for 2013 to eight.

Hull FC have signed Wakefield Trinity Wildcats prop Paul Johnson on a two-year deal, taking their total number of signings for 2013 to eight.

The Black and Whites were knocked out of this season`s play-offs at Warrington Wolves on Saturday, but wasted little time in getting back to work by today announcing the signing of Johnson.

The former St Helens forward, named as Wakefield's player of the year in 2011, recorded a second successive impressive campaign this year.

“Hull FC is one of the biggest clubs in the game and I’m really excited about the move,” the 24-year-old said.

“Hull have had a good year despite a lot of injuries and they’ve added some quality players to the ones already at the club for next season.”

Commenting on some of the other new faces he will be joining at the KC Stadium, he added: “The likes of Gareth Ellis and Daniel Holdsworth are top players, so it’s a good time to be joining the club and hopefully we can push on to big things.

“Whenever you play rugby, you want to win and be the best you can and I’m sure I can do that at Hull FC. With the squad that coach Peter Gentle is putting together, hopefully we’ll be pushing for silverware in the next few years.”

Gentle is still shaping his squad for next season, with ambitious owner Adam Pearson backing him in the transfer market, and he added: “We’re really pleased to have secured a deal for Paul, a player who has impressed throughout this season with his no-nonsense, committed approach to the game.”

The future of utility man Ryan McGoldrick currently remains unresolved, though.

McGoldrick joined the club on a short-term deal from Castleford Tigers in the summer, but that has now expired with the 31-year-old currently recovering from shoulder surgery.

Also leaving Wakefield is hooker Andy Ellis, who has joined Featherstone Rovers on a two-year contract.
