Veteran Australian forward Steve Menzies is to play on to within a couple of months of his 40th birthday.

The 38-year-old former Manly Sea Eagles stalwart, who became Super League’s oldest player earlier this year, today ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract with Catalans Dragons for 2013.

The former Australia international, who was 35 when he came to Super League with Bradford Bulls in 2009, will start his 21st professional season next February, two months after turning 39.

“I’m really happy to play for Catalans Dragons for another season,” said Menzies, who is coming to the end of his second year in the south of France.

“Me and my family love our time here, the club is getting better and better and I’m really excited about the future of French rugby league.

“I took my time. It was an important decision and I wanted to be 100% sure to compete at this level next season.”

Menzies is the most prolific tryscoring forward in Australia’s NRL with 180 tries in 349 appearances and already scored 43 tries in 91 Super League appearances, including 22 in 40 for the Dragons.

The evergreen second rower made the 2011 Super League Dream Team, represented the Exiles against England this summer and has played a key role in Catalans’ bid to reach a maiden Grand Final.

The French club meet defending champions Leeds Rhinos in Perpignan in Friday’s preliminary semi-final.

Catalans chairman Bernard Guasch said: “Steve is an example for all his team-mates and the young players who are coming through.

“He is a valuable player who brings us his experience and talent and he has showed over the last two seasons he was still among the best.”
