Schools ready for champion finals

Odsal and Wembley ready to stage school finals.

The 2012 Carnegie Champion Schools competition reaches its climax later this week with Odsal Stadium, Bradford and Wembley Stadium staging the eight finals.

The largest Rugby League knock-out competition in the world grew again this year with schools from across England and Wales taking to the field, in fact such has been the success of the competition over 50 percent of all schools in Yorkshire now take part.

“The competition is a great spectacle and having travelled to various regions watching games this year it is evident that the standard of play continues to improve,” said RFL Director of Participation and Strategic Partnerships David Gent.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all schools and teachers who support this tournament, their continued commitment over the years is something we are very thankful for.”

YEAR 7 GIRLS
In their first year the girls from Castleford Academy have maintained the school’s fine Carnegie Champion Schools tradition by reaching the National Final.

Having already won the Wakefield and Yorkshire Schools titles coach Keith Bullimore will be hoping his side can make it a hat-trick of cup successes.

Standing in their way will be St Peters RC High School. The Manchester school is starting to build a fine Rugby League pedigree and it prides itself on its sporting achievements, already excelling at football, basketball and athletics.

YEAR 8 GIRLS
St Peters RC High School make their second appearance of the day, this time facing Settle Middle School.

This St Peters side are no strangers to success having won the Year 7 title last year, although they will face an experienced Settle school which has qualified for a National Final for the fourth consecutive year.

YEAR 8 BOYS
The first boy’s final of the day will see St Wilfrids School take on the South Leeds Academy.

By reaching the final the St Wilfrids boys have become the fifth side from the school to reach a National Final in ten years.

Standing in their way will be West Yorkshire rivals South Leeds. The Leeds side have looked impressive in making the showpiece event and will be determined to make up for losing out in last year’s year 7 decider.

YEAR 9 GIRLS
Castleford Academy and Settle College will renew their rivalry in the Year 9 Girls final.

Like their year 7 counterparts Castleford are aiming to complete a trio of cup wins having already lifted the Wakefield and Yorkshire titles.

Settle arrive at Odsal in fine form having not lost a game in both the Yorkshire and national stages and the game could well be a classic.

YEAR 9 BOYS
Temple Moor High School will be hoping it’s third time lucky when they face Saints Peter & Paul Catholic College.

The Leeds school have lost at the final stage for the last two years and they will be hoping a recent visit from England head coach Steve McNamara can inspire them to victory.

Their Halton-based opponents have tasted glory in the National Finals before and this year 9 side will be desperate to win for retiring headmaster Gus Van Cauwealert.

YEAR 10 GIRLS
The girls in the Castleford Academy side will be making their third consecutive appearance in the National Final.

Coach Ryan Lloyd has already seen them lift the Wakefield and Yorkshire crowns, but won’t underestimate a Hollingworth Business & Enterprise College side that they have enjoyed some excellent rivalry with over the past four years.

YEAR 10 BOYS
The current group of boys in this Outwood Grange Academy side have won many accolades in the past few years and will be keen to add one more title to their collection.

Standing in their way are current dual-code Welsh champions Ystalyfera.

The Swansea-based school are competing in the national stages for the first time and can’t wait to travel north to play at such an iconic stadium.

YEAR 7 BOYS
Wembley awaits for Castleford Academy and Howard of Effingham as the sides meet in the last final of the 2012 Carnegie Champion Schools competition.

Castleford are no strangers to the final stages of the competition, in fact over the last eight years 36 of their teams have made it to a National Final. Former students now player in the Stobart Super League include Joe Arundel, Brett Ferres Greg Eden and Craig Huby.

Howard of Effingham will make history as the first school from the South to reach the flagship final and the Surrey school can be sure of a large following as they step out on to the famous turf.
