Players to choose captain - Anderson

New Huddersfield Giants coach Paul Anderson has asked the club’s senior players to choose a new captain for his first game in charge.

New Huddersfield Giants coach Paul Anderson has asked the club’s senior players to choose a new captain for his first game in charge.

Anderson, who has stepped up from his role of assistant following the sacking of Nathan Brown, confirmed that one of his first acts was to take the captain’s armband from Kevin Brown, who is joining Widnes Vikings next season.

Brown, 27, has been ruled out of Sunday’s home game against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats with an ankle injury and looks to have played his last game for the club.

Anderson is expected to make a number of changes to the side beaten 33-6 by Warrington Wolves in last Sunday’s Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final.

However, he is relaxed about the choice of a new skipper who will come from his newly-elected leadership group of Danny Brough, Eorl Crabtree, David Faiumu, Scott Grix, Luke O’Donnell and Luke Robinson.

“The leadership group is my choice but I’ve left it to them to decide who’ll lead out the side this weekend,” Anderson told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“I’ve told them to go away, think about it and then let me know at training on Saturday. If they can’t decide, then I’ll decide it for them.

“But whatever happens, it won’t be Kev any more. Although there’s still a lot to play for this season, I’m also looking at things for next year and those plans obviously don’t involve him.”
