Official Match Report

Halifax through to cup final

Halifax came from 18-0 down to beat Sheffield Eagles 24-22 and secure a place in the Northern Rail Cup final for the second successive season.

Beaten by Leigh in last year's final, Halifax earned the chance to go one better against Featherstone in Blackpool on July 29 by staging a tremendous fightback in the second semi-final at the Don Valley Stadium.

The home side led 18-0 after 25 minutes thanks to tries from Michael Knowles, Andrew Henderson and Scott Turner, all converted by Simon Brown.

But Halifax hit back with the aid of tries by Ryan Fieldhouse, Rob Worrincy and Anthony Thackeray, plus two goals from Steve Tyrer, to cut the gap to just two points after an hour.

Tyrer then tied the scores with a penalty and winger Wayne Rettie went over for the match-winning try on 66 minutes.

Knowles scored a second try six minutes from the end but Brown missed the goal that would have set up extra-time.
