GSAL win inaugural independent school 9s

The Grammar School at Leeds won the inaugural independent schools Rugby League 9s competition which was played at West Park RUFC on Tuesday

The Grammar School at Leeds won the inaugural independent schools Rugby League 9s competition which was played at West Park RUFC on Tuesday June 26.

Five schools competed in the round-robin competition: The Grammar School at Leeds, Silcoates School, Bolton School, Fulneck School and Ardingly College from Sussex.

The strongest two teams were the Grammar School at Leeds and Silcoates who met in the final with Leeds Grammar School triumphing 48-12.

The Grammar School at Leeds PE Teacher, Phil Holmes said: “Having had a taste of Rugby League last year and winning the Leeds Schools’ Championship, they were very keen to have another go.

“This competition was an excellent format and a good way for a handful of independent schools to sample the 13 a side code.

“The competition was strong and it was probably our previous experience which tipped the balance in our favour, particularly in a keenly contested final against Silcoates.

“Hopefully the RFL and English Schools Rugby League can build on this next year and, thanks to the enthusiasm and support of Gary Hetherington and Leeds Rhinos, more young players will have the opportunity to play Rugby League.”

After the tournament finished all competing teams enjoyed a meal and presentation at Headingley Carnegie Stadium as well as a tour of the stadium and also watched the professional Rugby League 9s
Finals night.

There was also a fastest man sprint competition which was contested by Furgus Wood (Ardingly), Jack Robinson (Silcoates) alongside Jack London and Tom Gurman (The Grammar School at Leeds) with Tom Gurman winning.

David Gent, RFL Director of Participation said: “We’re very pleased with how the inaugural competition went and all the players seemed to enjoy themselves which is the most important thing.

“We had a great deal of interest in the competition this year and this is just the start of what we hope will become a regular competition.”
