The RFL has welcomed an announcement from the Government which promises to provide greater protection for sports fields and facilities in local development and planning issues.

The updated planning guidance, which features in the National Planning Policy Framework published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, will ensure that local Rugby League facilities and playing fields will not be built upon unless they are surplus to requirement, or must be replaced elsewhere by equivalent or improved facilities.

RFL Director of Participation David Gent said: “The RFL welcomes the changes made to new planning guidance and is pleased that the Government has responded to our concerns on protecting playing fields and sports facilities.

“Rugby League is a community-focused game played throughout the UK and the Government’s commitment to replace lost fields and facilities where they are needed is a positive and important development for the sport.”
