Warrington Wolves’ England forward Ben Westwood looks set to miss Friday’s Stobart Super League derby with St Helens after being charged over an incident that broke the nose of his team-mate Trent Waterhouse.

Westwood reacted angrily to a raised elbow by Wigan prop Epalahame Lauaki during his side’s 22-20 win over the Warriors last Friday and was put on report by referee Richard Silverwood.

Westwood’s swinging arm accidentally crashed into Waterhouse’s face before also connecting with Lauaki and today he was charged with a grade B offence of striking an opponent, which carries a ban of between one and two matches.

Waterhouse was dazed in the incident but has been cleared to face Saints at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Lauaki, who was also put on report for raising his elbow, has been told he faces no further action after the Rugby Football League’s match-review panel decided the first point of contact was on the chest of his opponent.

However, the former Hull FC forward could still be in trouble after being charged with a dangerous tackle from an incident later in the match for which he was placed on report for a second time.

Lauaki is facing a grade C charge, which carries a suspension of up to three matches.

Warrington full-back Brett Hodgson scored points from both penalties conceded by Lauaki to turn a 20-18 deficit into a four-point victory, and Wigan coach Shaun Wane revealed his player was “absolutely devastated” after believing he had cost his side the victory.

Both Lauaki and Westwood have until 11am tomorrow to submit an early-guilty plea which would enable them to avoid a hearing.

Widnes Vikings forward Hep Cahill will appear before the RFL’s disciplinary committee tomorrow evening after he was charged with a grade B offence of striking with the forearm during his side’s 30-38 win over London Broncos.
